EMDR and the Limbic System
So there are two uses that our culture uses for the word heart. One use references the bodily organ that pumps blood through our bodies. The other reference to heart is often used with our feelings like "our broken heart". Did you know this reference to heart actually lies in our brain? When we refer to "heart" this way we are actually referring to our limbic system. This is the part of the brain that supports our long-term memory, emotions, behavior, and motivation.
It is my belief that EMDR seems to activate and is at the core of the reprocessing of EMDR. EMDR pulls from many psychological orientations in that it accesses our emotions, thoughts, body, and memories and helps "reorganize" them so healing can take place. In many ways, EMDR seems act like the defragmentation process of a computer. In all, EMDR allows for a person to slow down enough to remember events in a way that can invite healing when for so long pain as been the dominating theme.
